Track Review: Jessicka - 'Penniless Fools'

Singer/songwriter Jessicka has released her newest single 'Penniless Fool'. Signed to Light Organ Records, the Vancouver based artist blends atmospheric reverbs with hard-hitting beats and electronic sound design to create a sound that's sometimes epic whilst also being incredibly catchy.

First things first, the production of the track is fantastic. The overall sound is crisp, clear and of a brilliantly high standard. Each instrument is perfectly well balanced in the mix and to be honest, with this type of song the cleanliness is welcome. The track opens with cascading pianos and synths backed by heavily reverberated drums. Jessicka's wistful vocal contrasts brilliantly with the epic scale of the instrumentation. The chord progressions used in the opening verses are strangely unconventional giving the song a sense of unease and interest. Jessicka has combined her left-field influences with her love of pop to create a unique sound.

The chorus of the song is easily the highlight. Jessicka's songwriting and talent for writing a catchy hook is at the forefront here and the backing vocals and harmonies blend perfectly. There are similarities with North London duo IDER. Their vocal melodies and tones sound very alike, but Jessicka's sound is more organic and natural.

'Penniless Fools' is a brilliantly sounding track with sharp hooks, lush production and fantastic vocal performances that tick all the boxes. Jessicka has clearly honed her sound, drawing from all types of musical styles to create something new and highly exciting.

'Penniless Fools' is out on all streaming services now but you can watch the brilliantly cinematic video below.

Track Review: IDLES - 'Colossus'

Fans of Not Another Music Blog. will know we adore IDLES. Last year their incredible debut album 'Brutalism' was placed third in our top 50 albums of 2017. Now, the Bristolian punks are back with their new single 'Colossus', their first release since signing to the amazing Partisan Records.

A song of two halves, 'Colossus' is initially a slow burner. Heavily distorted chords are driven by distant, percussive rim shots as vocalist Joe Talbot's aggressively distinct vocal is introduced. 'Colossus' takes on forms of toxic masculinity and Talbot's performance perfectly encapsulates his feelings of what a man should be.

Credit: Lindsay Melbourne
The tension created by the band is palpable as the track rises and rises becoming more intense as it progresses. String stabs give the song a sense of dark foreboding before the track becomes more groove driven, reminiscent of the IDLES we know and love. The intense levels the band reach toward the end of the first half are incredibly high making this new single one of the most fleshed out and extreme IDLES releases yet.

It's in the second half of the song where they really let rip. The message remains the same, but it's here where the fun really kicks in. The fast tempo, gang vocals and Talbot's unhinged warbling come together to create an amazingly riotous sound. The abrupt ending keeps us going back for more and we can't wait to hear how this new track fits in the context of a full album.

IDLES have become the voice of a new generation of punks since the release of their debut album 'Brutalism' and this new tune has solidified that statement. Their incredibly relatable lyrics and violent instrumentals have made IDLES easily the best and most important band in the world right now. It's time for people to sit up and take note. IDLES are here to stay.

'Colossus' is out now on all streaming services and you can watch the amazing video directed by Will Hooper below.

Track Review: Sunken - 'Over the Days'

Sunken have been making waves for only a short amount of time. Building their burgeoning reputation with shows alongside the likes of Puma Blue and Sorry, the four-piece have finally released their debut single 'Over the Days' through Handsome Dad Records.

Entirely self-produced by the South London-based band, 'Over the Days' opens with a vintage string section delicately accentuated by jazz-influenced piano chords before Poppy Billingham's beautifully soulful vocals are introduced. 17-year-old Billingham says, 'the song explores the notion of co-dependency within a relationship, learning to be less reliant on one person whilst equally learning to love them unconditionally.'

One of the most intriguing traits of the band is the way they combine organic instruments with digital synths to create a unique, modern sound of jazz-tinged, soulful grooves. Structurally the song is quite linear and doesn't really conform to any stereotype of pop music standards. The free-flowing structure coupled with the forever changing vocal melodies ensure this track is interesting throughout its hefty five-minute runtime.

The outro is a real touch of class. The neo-soul and jazz vibes are amplified as an amazing saxophone solo is played and the drum grooves intensify. It's here where we are able to truly appreciate the musical talent of the band.

This debut single from Sunken is an absolute triumph. It's the perfect slice of experimental, soulful and incredibly mature pop we absolutely adore. It's bound to be the be the soundtrack to many late summer night in the months to come.

Track Review: Basement Revolver - 'Baby'

Ontario trio Basement Revolver have released their gorgeously dense new single 'Baby'. The band are Chrisy Hurn (guitar/vocals), Nimal Agalawatte (bass/synth) and Brandon Munro (drums) and the track is the first off their debut LP released on the 24th of August via Fear of Missing Out Records and Sonic Unyon Records

The track is a plodding, down-tempo affair with heavy reverbs and piercing lead vocals. The grandiose nature of 'Baby' is something we weren't initially expecting from the three-piece and it grabbed our attention instantly. The most striking element of Basement Revolver's sound has to be Hurn's lead vocals; her passion and tones cut through the thick, murky instrumentation perfectly.

Hurn says, 'Baby was written at a point in my relationship where I was so happy with my partner and with the things in my life at that point – but I felt an overall dissatisfaction and sadness that I couldn’t explain.'. The chorus clearly states how Hurn was feeling and the direct lyricism is perfectly accentuated by Hurn's passionate delivery.

Musically the track is brilliant. The melodic nature of the instrumentation coupled with the emotive vocals means this tune packs a punch. It's noisy and abrasive at times and could benefit from a slight shift in dynamic, but to be honest, we're nitpicking here.

This is a fantastic teaser track for Basement Revolver's debut record released in August. If you're a fan of noisy, emo-rock then this is the perfect sad track for you.

Listen to 'Baby' below.

Track Review: Sauce - 'There's A Fool'

Manchester-based rock and rollers Sauce have returned with their killer new single 'There's A Fool'. This time around they've teamed up with Alex Greaves to deliver a track full of massive choruses, guitar solo's and of course, those signature #riffs. 'There's A Fool' is set to feature on the bands eagerly awaited debut EP released later this year.

Swirling, psychedelic guitars open the track before we're thrust straight into the blistering chorus. Sauce are clearly here to grab our attention and the first opening bars do exactly that. Molyneux's vocals tear straight through the lush instrumentation and dense backing vocals. The song doesn't really let up in the verses either where the vocals are still as intense and the beat drives hard. The slight dynamic contrast comes from the guitars as they take more of a back seat.

Structurally the song doesn't mess about. Sauce have favoured a simpler approach here than their previous efforts and they pull it off well. With two choruses before the one minute mark, it's clear the band are vying for a catchy, radio-friendly hit. They have also introduced added percussion and their backing vocals are much more improved. As a whole 'There's a Fool' is a massive step forward for the young Manchester band.

Finally, the highlight of the track has to be the rousing final chorus. Dean really let's rip with his vocal and his talent is undeniable. More moments like this and it won't be long before Sauce are filling large venues on a weekly basis.

With this new single, the band have clearly grown and matured. Working with Alex Greaves has been an inspired choice as he has given the band more direction and crafted a smoother sound. We're very excited about the impending debut EP and you should be too.

Track Review: ZELAH - 'Closer'

Alt-pop outfit ZELAH have released their debut single 'Closer' through London-based indie label Which Hit? Records. Hailing from London via Bristol, the three-piece blend dark, raw and electronic soundscapes with soulful vocals that take influence from Sigrid, to the brilliant BANKS

'Closer' is a slow builder. Initially, the sparse instrumentation paves a way for the soft lead vocals of Zelah Van-Gowler before new elements are added to keep things interesting. The simple guitar notes and piano chords are backed by a straightforward beat, therefore, allowing Van-Gowler's vocals to take centre-stage. The simple instrumentation and production allows for the song to channel an intimacy that is hard to find in modern day pop music. The way ZELAH have created a sense of intrigue around their sound is brilliant.

'Closer', as explained by Van-Gowler is, "the feeling of realising that you're starting to develop feelings for someone, and wanting to tell them everything at once but also wanting to fight your feelings back at the same time". These feelings are accentuated by the slow build in the instrumentation and the final exhilarating climax.

On the choruses, you really start to get a sense of how ZELAH sound as a whole unit. The instrumentation becomes more fleshed out and the lush backing vocals compliment Van-Gowler's more intense delivery. The final stages of the track are lush and dark building to a rousing final section. It's here where ZELAH really come into there own with new musical elements and fantastic vocal passages.

With this new single, the alt-pop outfit have truly stamped their authority and shown they mean business. The way the band play with dynamics, emotions and melodies has made us want more. It won't be long before ZELAH start making waves in the world of pop.

Listen to 'Closer' below or check the tune on your favourite streaming site.

Track Review: Tranquil Sea - 'Home Fires'

Tranquil Sea are an alternative rock band hailing from Liverpool. 'Home Fires' is the latest offering from the four-piece who combine piano-led, driving instrumentals with strong vocal melodies and a good old epic chorus. The band draw influence from artists such as Kings of Leon, The Killers and the electrified version of Mumford & Sons.

'Home Fires' opens with a rolling drum beat before arpeggiated pianos are introduced along with broken guitar chords. The lead vocals are the first thing that jumps out here. Brian Jack Pilkington's control is brilliant and the way his vocals and melodies cut through the dense instrumentation is great. It's in the first chorus where Pilkington really shines and the slight vocal breaks give the song a fluidity against the rigid instrumentation.

The way the gang vocals are introduced in the second verse is a touch of class. They add a new dynamic to Pilkington's vocal and the passion there is plain for all to hear. The highlight of the track has to be the guitar solo. There's not enough of these around these days and Tranquil Sea duly deliver. It's an absolute face melter. The song then builds to the final stages where the band let rip with repetitive vocal lines and massive instrumental breaks.

According to the four-piece, 'Home Fires' is a labour of love and the lyrics centre around staying true to yourself. We can only hope Tranquil Sea stick to that mantra as this is a brilliant track and the band have clearly defined their epic, stadium-filling rock.

Listen to 'Home Fires' below or check it on all good streaming services.

Live Review: Decave #7 - Oscar Jerome x S. Fidelity Collaboration @ Birthdays, London (11/05/2018)

If you haven't heard of Decave and the brilliant collaboration night the small but passionate London-based promoters put on once a month, then please allow us to enlighten you. The premise is simple - they get two great musicians who have never met before, make them spend five hours in the studio collaborating and then, on the night, they perform their creations live at a venue somewhere in London. Past collaborators have included artists like Goat Girl, ISLAND, Blaenavon and Line Fire and for their 7th outing, singer-songwriter Oscar Jerome and electronic beat maker, S. Fidelity.

It's fair to say, as soon as the performance started, we and the relatively large audience were hooked. Jerome's incredible guitar playing coupled with the hard, but sparse beats of S. Fidelity instantly worked a treat. They opened with two tracks which were both created that day. Much to our amazement they were both fully formed songs with clear structures, lyrics and brilliant instrumentation. We have to confess, we arrived at Decave with a slight trepidation. It could have been far too easy for S. Fidelity to play a drum loop whilst Jerome shredded across the top for a good half an hour but luckily, this wasn't the case. These songs showcased each artist's superb talent with a high air of professionalism. Jerome's soulful vocals and guitars, combined with the electronic beats and brilliant use of S. Fidelity's vocoder amounted to a captivating performance.

One of the best things to take away from the night was how much fun both artists looked to be having on stage. It looked as if they had been friends for years, but in fact, they had never met before the day. They then performed a John Martyn cover which silenced the crowd before each artist broke into a solo rendition from their respective back catalogues. The setlist itself was concise and you could really tell each artist had put in maximum effort and thought into the whole process.

We were genuinely blown away by how good the performance was. Decave have got a brilliant concept here and it won't be long before the crowds get bigger and bigger. Also, it's clear Oscar and S. Fidelity should record a split EP. The chemistry the lads showed was electric and we'd definitely go see them perform together again.

Make sure you keep up to date with all things Decave by 'liking' their Facebook page.

Album Review: Arctic Monkeys - 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino'

Sheffield four-piece Arctic Monkeys have returned with their new full-length album 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino' and first since 2013's incredible 'AM'. The hype surrounding the LP announcement has seen them sell out massive tours across America, the UK and Europe with only a few dodgy pictures, a new album tracklist and their previous records to back them up.

First thing's first, there's been a lot of predictions about this record. 'Cosmic as fuck', or 'More Tame Impala than a Tame Impala record', and even (stupidly) 'They'll go back to basics'. Let's debunk all those theories right away; it's not like any of that. Simply put, if you like Alex Turner crooning like he does on The Last Shadow Puppets stuff then you're more inclined to like this one. If you want bangers then this is probably not the album for you.

Nearly every track is a piano-led ballad with Turner's rambling, heavily effected vocal taking centre stage throughout. It takes nearly three minutes into track one for the first guitar riff to really pop. But it's worth the wait. 'Star Treatment' is a slow opener but there are moments of real magic, such as the slight time signature changes from Matt Helders. The album sounds like an Alex Turner solo project more than an Arctic Monkeys record in parts but there are still moments when the band come together to blow minds like towards the end of 'American Sports'.

The best track and the one with the most memorable chorus is easily the groovy 'Four out of Five'. Alex Turner is on cracking form and it's probably the most upbeat song on the tracklisting having the potential to fill those sold out festivals this summer. (And maybe a Glastonbury headline slot?! We can only hope).

Lyrically there isn't much direction or focus, and Turner loses his train of thought on many occasion. For a man who encapsulated youth so well in their early records, this is a slight disappointment. There are elements of experimentation throughout the album but there are also moments where Arctic Monkeys could have been more adventurous. The pacing of the record is rather stagnant and instrumentally there's not much variation apart from 'Science Fiction' where eerie synth leads swirl around the plodding rhythms.

You would be forgiven for getting the feeling that 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino' is an album of transition more than one with a fully formed sound. Could this be the bridge to an even more adventurous and wild Arctic Monkeys in the not so distant future? We can only live in hope.

7/10
Best track - Four out of Five
Worst track - The Ultracheese
