EP Review: Sports Team - 'Winter Nets'

Sports Team are an indie-rock band from Northwest London. The suit wearing, hip shaking, six-piece have been slowly making a name for themselves on the London underground scene with their larger-than-life live shows. ‘Winter Nets’ is the group's debut offering and is released through the brilliant indie label Nice Swan Records.

The EP opens with ‘Beverly Rose’, a song full of twists and turns as the tempo forever changes and new melodic elements are introduced. Alex Rice’s vocals exude passion as his melodies are delivered with Jim Morrison-esque flair. The second track, ‘Camel Crew’ has the potential to be one of the best and most loved tunes of 2018. The upbeat tempo, catchy guitar riffs and anthemic choruses ensure the track has all the ingredients for a summer festival classic.

The title track ‘Winter Nets’ is a more laidback affair with a lead guitar part that could have come straight from the ‘Noel Gallagher School of Writing a Banging Riff’. It’s here though that Sports Team cement their ability to write a gloriously simple chorus. On ‘Back to the Point’ Rice’s lyrical humour and satire shines, and on the EP’s closer, ‘Stanton’, the six-piece bring the chaos reminiscent of those near-legendary live shows. We will never tire of the line ‘I’m gonna buy you a flip screen Motorola, it’s gonna make you happier than you think.’

With this debut EP, Sports Team have stamped their authority on British guitar music in a big way. The raw instrumentation, intelligent lyrics and catchy hooks all amount to a thrilling body of work.

Listen to the EP on Spotify below and catch Sports Team live at Peckham's Five Bells with YOWL and FUR on the 1st of Feb for Independent Venue Week.

Track Review: Lucky Girl - 'Awake'

Fresh from a recent name change, Lucky Girl have released their brand new single 'Awake'. The Hastings-based indie band, formerly known as Laura Palmer cite their influences to include The Maccabees, Fleetwood Mac and Dry the River.

The track opens with a simple, heavily reverbed guitar riff before thumping drums are introduced. The London Grammar influenced lead vocals then takes centre stage. The sparse instrumentation allows for the vocals to breathe and build with a delicate touch before the chorus finally kicks in. In the choruses, lead guitars harmonize with the vocal melody to accentuate and add another layer of dynamic as the drums and bass pick up the pace creating an unexpected but highly welcome groove.

'Awake' is a brooding epic of a track with dark themes and melodic tones throughout. The song plays on simple ideas to good effect but there are moments where Lucky Girl could have been more daring. The final stages of the song sometimes drag and it's here where a little more experimentation could go along way.

With 'Awake', Lucky Girl have carved out a musical style that feels unique and with the right amount of experimentation and a little more audacity, the four-piece from Hastings can really make a name for themselves.

Listen to 'Awake' below.

Track Review: Geowulf - 'Sunday'

Australian natives and London-based dream-pop duo Geowulf have released their brand new single titled 'Sunday'. The single arrives prior to the release of their debut album 'Great Big Blue' on the 16th of February. Since 2016, and the release of their beautiful debut single 'Saltwater', Geowulf have garnered critical acclaim for their dreamy indie-pop tunes whilst racking up more than eight-million Spotify streams along the way.

The steady pace of the track is reminiscent of all Sundays (especially ours) and the warm, glistening production by Duncan Mills (Peace, The Vaccines) gives the track that extra sprinkle of magic. Star Kendricks whistful lead vocals are complimented brilliantly by the soothing backing vocals of Toma Banjanin to create beach-like imagery. The introduction of the lead guitar towards the end of the track adds another layer of gentle dynamics before one last rousing chorus.

'Sunday' is a melodic slice of hazy pop with catchy vocal hooks and dreamy synth work that is sure to get fans dreaming of the summer. We can't wait to hear the new album and we're expecting big things from Geowulf in 2018.

Find the track on all good streaming sites or listen to 'Sunday' below.

The Worst and Best of New Music Friday (19/01/2018)

It's New Music Friday and we're here to guide you through the worst and best tunes released today. Click the titles to listen!

Worst

The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy

The Nickelback of the EDM world have returned to haunt your nightmares. This is easily the worst song of the year so far and unless Ed Sheeran churns out more vanilla shite, it'll probably hold that award throughout 2018.  It's unadventurous, bland and lyrically drab. The Chainsmokers' attempt at attitude seems clumsy and falls terribly flat.

Kylie Minogue - Dancing

Let's not beat around the bush here, Kylie Minogue had some bangers back in the day. Unfortunately this new one is a shocker. The euro-pop finger-picked guitar combined with dated synth work and claps, all combine to create an awkwardly unadventurous attempt at sounding current. Also, it's time to ban the vocal sampled drop that's in every pop song now. It's so annoying.

Callum Beattie - Some Heroes Don't Wear Capes

This genuinely sounds like a song written by some kid who's just learnt his first four guitar chords. Beattie's voice is weak and all over the place, also please don't get us started on those awfully soppy lyrics. The whole tune is just one massive cringefest and we deserve better.

Example - The Answer

We genuinely thought this bloke had vanished into the pop ether for good. It wasn't to be. Your 'Carling drinking mate's favourite artist who saw him at a local festival performing on the back of a truck with a random DJ' is back and is worse than ever. The drop is boring, the vocal melody is monotonous and the rap is so bad it hurts. 'Go the distance like Mo does' is one of the worst lyrics we've heard.

Honourable Mentions

John Gibbons - My Reflection
Burna Boy - Heaven's Gate Feat. Lilly Allen
Justin Timberlake - Supplies
Tom Grennan - Sober

Best

Mouse On Mars - Dimensional People Part III Feat. Justin Vernon

German DJ duo Mouse On Mars have enlisted the help of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon to create a beautifully warped first single which is off their upcoming project 'Dimensional People'. The track is a soundscape of Vernon's beautiful layered vocals, saxophone notes and stringed instruments. It's one of those tunes where you hear a new element after each listen and we love it.

Gengahr - Before Sunrise

'Before Sunrise' is the latest single off Gengahr's imminent album 'Where Wildness Grows'. The track is fun, and brilliantly performed with a great groove that locks perfectly with the bass. The lead guitar riff is catchy and is accentuated by lovely synth work. 'Before Sunrise' is going to be a sure-fire summer festival hit.

Mount Eerie - Distortion

Phil Elverum is back with an eleven-minute epic of a track. Elverum is as captivating as ever with his storytelling as the song builds with vocal harmonies, pianos and dark guitar strums to create a musical atmosphere that's impossible to not get sucked into.

Jimi Hendrix - Mannish Boy

Jimi Hendrix's previously unreleased cover of Muddy Waters' 'Mannish Boy' was recorded at the famous Record Plant in New York way back in 1969. Accompanied by his Band of Gypsys, Hendrix sounds as timeless as ever. It's the first single from the new posthumous album 'Both Sides of the Sky' released in March of this year.

Honourable Mentions

Geowulf - Sunday
S. Carey - More I See
Young Fathers - In My View

Track Review: Mitch Bullen - 'Distance'

Mitch Bullen is a London based singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. He draws influence from artists that span different eras such as Ray Charles and Bon Iver. Performing regularly around London, his songs are inspired by life, time and relationships.

'Distance' opens with a rhythmic, finger-picked acoustic guitar part that sets the melancholic nature of the track. Bullen sings with a gentle tone reminiscent of Dallas Green that fits with the guitar brilliantly and his soft falsetto is controlled and calm against the pulsing instrumentation.

Bullen has a talent for creating textures that build throughout the song. The added bass pulses and layered vocal harmonies are a lovely touch that give the song depth and purpose. Unfortunately the drums in the track are mixed slightly too high and when they're introduced the harshness can be quite jarring. A little less compression here could have gone a long way.

Overall, 'Distance' is a well-written, melodic and dreamy slice of folk-pop. Mitch Bullen has delivered a song of captivating melodies that is sure to capture the imagination of many people to come. 'Distance' will be released on all good streaming platforms on the 19th of January but in the meantime, listen below.

Album Review: Shame - 'Songs of Praise'

Shame formed three years ago in a practice space at the Queen's Head in Brixton. With three months of spare time ahead after completing their AS levels, starting a band seemed the best thing to set their minds to. Since their incarnation Shame have toured relentlessly with heavy weights like Fat White Family and Warpaint gaining a massive live following and earning themselves some well deserved hype at the same time. 'Songs of Praise' is the punk band's debut release through American indie label Dead Oceans.

The album opens with the dark and brooding track 'Dust on Trial'. Vocalist Charlie Steen performs with a grit and attitude that sets the album up perfectly. Second track 'Concrete' is a fast and powerful tear through trapped relationships and self doubt. The call and response vocals in the verses grow with intensity as the song progresses to the catchiest of choruses. The lead single 'One Rizla' is a fantastic take on embracing insecurities, and is also one of the most melodic cuts on the record. The guitar riffs, combined with heavy grooves and charmingly sloppy vocals come together to create one of the best tunes released in 2017. 'The Lick' is a brooding stomper of spoken word lyricism and sludging bass lines whilst 'Tasteless' and 'Donk' crank up the speed and intensity once more.

Shame's brilliant use of dynamics is brought to the table on slow builder 'Gold Hole'. The final chorus erupts triumphantly with Steen's vocals at their most passionate. Towards the end of the record it feels as if there could be a little more variation when it comes to the instrumentation and overall performance. 'Friction' and 'Lampoon' generally feel a little monotonous. All this is forgotten though as the final track 'Angie' is a closer of epic proportions. Clocking in at just under seven minutes, the track builds and drops throughout before transforming into a brash wall of beautiful noise.

'Songs of Praise' is an exceptional debut from a young band with a glowing future. The album itself was recorded in a mere ten days and with a total run time of thirty-eight minutes, the record is concise and to the point. The mainstream music world may not want them but Shame are the guitar band Britain needs.

8/10

The Worst and Best of New Music Friday (12/01/2018)

It's New Music Friday and we're here to guide you through the worst and best tunes released today. Click the titles to listen!

Worst

Jack White - Connected by Love

Jack White is back and weirder than ever. This tune simply doesn't work. The track opens with some strange dubstep wobbles before Jack's crooney, off-kilter vocals are introduced. The whole thing just feels super awkward and the odd vocal melody is nothing but annoying. The organ solo is OK, but the track as a whole misses the mark completely.

Fall Out Boy - Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)

After being transported back to 2005 last night at an intimate Fall Out Boy show in Brixton, we could've been forgiven for expecting good things from the new FOB album. Unfortunately not. This track stinks. The dance/pop influenced instrumentals feel cringey and overblown and the 'Woah's' in the chorus are just plain lazy. Maybe it's time for a Greatest Hits tour? No-one wants this new stuff.

Vance Joy - We're Going Home

Australian ukulele playing troubadour Vance Joy has returned with his sickeningly drab single. The most boring chord progression linked with mundane melodies and predictable instrumentation makes this song one of the most forgettable singles we've heard in a long time. With the likes of this bloke and Mr. Sheeran clogging up the 'acoustic' space in the charts, it's no wonder the genre is at a low.

SKYGGE - Hello Shadow Feat. Kiesza

Most pop music nowadays sounds like it's been made by robots, but we don't actually want REAL robots making it. SKYGGE is an artificial intelligence experiment which consists of computers programmed to sequence music based on data and algorithms. This is pretty worrying for pop music as a whole and to be quite honest, the tune sounds terrible too.

Honourable mentions

Best

David Byrne - Everybody's Coming to My House

Talking Heads front man David Byrne returns with his brand-new single 'Everybody's Coming to My House. Vocally the track is wonderful and their are moments of real gold. The drum beat is driving but chaotic and the rest of the experimental instrumentation glistens throughout. We can't wait to hear Byrne's new album which his released in March.

Oscar Jerome - Smile on a Screen Feat. James Massiah

London-based multi-instrumentalist Oscar Jerome has been making a name for himself in the South London music scene recently. His new single combines attitude with punk, jazz, hip hop and funk to build a fresh and unique sound. A must listen for fans of Tom Misch and The Clash.

Sunflower Bean - Crisis Fest

American rock trio Sunflower Bean are back with their first single off their upcoming album 'Twentytwo in Blue'. The track is simple but catchy. The bluesy, 70s influenced riffs are a lovely touch. Expect big things from Sunflower Bean this year.

Jay Rock - King's Dead Feat. Kendrick Lamar & Future

Jay Rock has enlisted hip hop giants Kendrick Lamar and Future for his new track which is also the latest off Marvel's Black Panther soundtrack. James Blake also shows up for a warped middle-eight before the track transitions into a dark trap beat. Everyone is on top form here and it's a joy to listen to.

Honourable mentions

Kali Uchis - After the Storm Feat. Tyler, the Creator & Bootsy Collins
Karen O - YO! MY SAINT Feat. Michael Kiwanuka

Finally, shout out to Shame and their debut album 'Songs of Praise', a full review will be coming in the next week.

Live Review: YOWL, Drahla and Crewel Intentions @ The Old Blue Last, London (09/01/2018)

It's a pretty good sign when you have to queue to get in to a punk show full of young, up and coming talent. The crowds were out in force for the first of DIY's 'Hello 2018' shows at East London's famous Old Blue Last. Unfortunately the queue's downstairs meant that we missed spoken-word, grunge-punk heroes Hotel Lux. Maybe next time eh lads?

First up were Crewel Intentions who's online presence is barely even a thing. Fronted by Chilli Jesson of Palma Violets fame and with no music to be found anywhere, we didn't particularly know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. The band were brilliantly tight with the bass and drums locking in perfectly. The addition of the keyboards added a 70s rock influence to each track whilst Jesson's energy and wild eccentricity had the audience in the palm of his hands; it was hard to count how many times he jumped into the crowd. For a band shrouded in secrecy and relying purely on word of mouth, Crewel Intentions made a massive statement of intent.

Leeds trio Drahla didn't let a little sound malfunction at the start dampen their set. Their raw and noisy sound showed elements of darkness throughout. Luciel Brown's vocals were relaxed and contrasted well with the hectic instrumentation from the rest of the band. After the release of their brilliant new EP titled 'Third Article' in November of 2017, Drahla backed their buzz with a brilliant live performance.

YOWL causing chaos

Finally, YOWL took to the stage. The Peckham based five-piece instantly made a good impression. Their erratic stage presence coupled with melodic instrumentation and a charming sloppiness was fantastic. YOWL blasted through a set full of crowd favourites such as 'My Headache Likes to Speak' where front man Gub showed brilliant vocal range transitioning from falsetto to gruff shouting with ease. The highlight came when the lads played the incredible 'Saturday Drag'; one of the songs of 2017. The tune captured the hearts of the crowd as every single person sang along word for word. Gub's two broken arms didn't hinder him as he proceeded to perform the tune with great passion whilst perched on a crowd members shoulders. Crowd surfing and mayhem followed as The Old Blue Last lost their minds to a brilliantly well oiled set from one of the best bands on the scene at the moment.

It was incredible to see such a turnout on a miserable Tuesday night in January. There's something special bubbling away at the moment with the London punk scene and it's only a matter of time before everyone else starts to notice.

Track Review: yawwn - 'Partisan'

'Partisan' is the debut single from Wimbledon-based indie five-piece yawwn. The band have worked with producer and fellow Wimbledon native Lou E to craft a sound that blends psych-rock with indie-pop to great effect.

The track opens with a lovely drum groove that is brought to life by arpeggiated synth loops and a psychedelic influenced sample that sounds as if its been pulled straight off an American TV show in the 60s. The instrumentation is adventurous and daring with little moments of experimentation throughout the verses. In the chorus, the simple vocal hook contrasts well with the busy and exciting rhythm section. The chorus is very strong. The simplicity of the lyrics ('I have a feeling that I'll need you always') coupled with the catchiest of vocal melodies will have live audiences singing in droves in no time. The final stages of the track are a joy. The drum groove simplifies and the brilliant vocals and chord progressions amount to a triumphant pop influenced climax.

For a debut single yawwn have pulled off something really impressive here. The track is catchy, fun, experimental and overall the band show great musical talent. The tune launches on the 13th of January at thfirst of their 'CLUB YAWWN' nights in Wimbledon before the release of their debut EP later on in the year. It's exciting times for yawwn and 'Partisan' has definitely peaked our interest.

Check out 'Partisan' below.

Album Review: Francis and the Lights - 'Just for Us'

Francis and the Lights is the musical project by American singer-songwriter and producer Francis Starlite. 'Just for Us' was dropped as a surprise release in the new year and is Francis' second full length LP after his successful debut 'Farewell, Starlite!' back in 2016. Francis has made a name for himself by rubbing shoulders with some of the finest artists around at the moment including Justin Vernon, Kanye West and Chance the Rapper.

The album opens well with 'Morning' which is a short piano led ballad that sounds like it's been lifted straight off his mate Chance the Rapper's mix-tape 'Colouring Book'. Second track 'Just for Us' combines a hard-hitting, rigid beat with beautifully punchy synth work. A guest appearance from Justin Vernon in the chorus is a great touch but the pair can't quite seem to recreate the amazing success of their previous hit 'Friends'.

Unfortunately, the record goes down hill from here. Third track 'Faithful' feels like a boring paint-by-numbers ballad that is introduced too early in the track-listing, whereas 'Back in Time' aims for fun but ultimately sounds like a half-baked idea. On 'Tear It Up', 'Scream So Loud' and 'I Won't Lie to You', Francis' vocals are really questionable, by being less reliant on auto-tune and effects, his voice sounds weak and is melodically all over the shop.

In the final stages of the record there are some nice moments such as the nostalgic synth parts at the end of 'Breaking Up' but ultimately it's too little, too late. Overall the album is sloppy and feels rushed, especially in the vocal department. Each song seems like an unfinished product and the album closes with a whimper. Compared to his debut, 'Just for Us' is void of those memorable pop hits that made Francis' last effort so enjoyable.

3/10

The Worst and Best of New Music Friday (05/01/2018)

It's New Music Friday and we're here to guide you through the worst and best tunes released today. Click the titles to listen!

Worst

Liam Payne & Rita Ora - For You (Fifty Shades Freed)

We can't believe they are still making these Fifty Shades of Whatever films but hear we are. The dull one from One Direction has teamed up with Rihanna wannabe Rita Ora to deliver this awfully drab dance number. It's fantastically forgettable, much like the films.

Arlissa - Hearts Ain't Gonna Lie Feat. Jonas Blue

We were hoping that 2018 would be the year that tropical house died. Sadly, it seems like this isn't to be. Arlissa has joined forces with Essex based producer and DJ Jonas Blue to create a tune that plays on all the current EDM clichés. Big drop? Check. Vocal samples? Check. Pitch bending synth lead instead of a proper chorus? Check. Oh how inventive of you!

DON BROCO - Come Out to LA

We genuinely believe guitar music is going to come back in a big way this year, but if rock bands start churning out material like this new DON BROCO single then consider our prediction a failure. Terrible lyrics and vocal performances coupled with finger clicks and dodgy synth stabs make this new tune a recipe for disaster.

Showtek & Moby - Natural Blues

We can only hope that Moby got paid an absolute fortune for this abomination. This weird remix/collaboration of Moby's prefect original now has added trance synths and a massive house beat resulting in one of the most awkward releases of the week.

Honourable Mentions

Fetty Wap & KDL - With You
Tofer Dolan - Electric Heart
Wolf Alice - Don't Delete the Kisses (Charli XCX x Post Precious Remix)

Best

Justin Timberlake - Filthy

Mr JT is back. The pop legend has taken his music in a super funky, electronic, grown-up direction. The production is magnificent with frequent JT collaborator Timbaland taking the reigns to create a weird and wonderful experimental funk number. The dirty, maximalist ending might not be to everyone's taste but we can't wait to hear what's next.

Bruno Mars - Finesse (Remix) Feat. Cardi B

Pop maestro Bruno Mars has released a new version of 'Finesse', now with added Cardi B. Simply put this tune is a whole lot of 90's influenced fun. Bruno Mars proves why he is the master of the pop hook and the way he and Cardi B play of each other is great. We challenge you to not want to dance to this.

FREAK - Everyone's the Same

FREAK have started the new year with a bang. There's riffs galore in the new single from the punk boys from Chelmsford. The tune is fast, bold and in your face with Connar's lead vocal taking more of a melodic turn compared to previous FREAK releases. This one will definitely knock your socks off.

Superorganism - Everybody Wants to be Famous

We were blown away when we were lucky enough to see Superorganism perform this tune on Later... with Jools Holland back in 2017 and the official recorded version is just as good. Full of fun samples and quirky production, the eight-piece 'supergroup' are in for a big 2018.

Honourable Mentions

MGMT - Hand It Over
James Blake - Vincent
Kendrick Lamar & SZA - All the Stars
The Vaccines - I Can't Quit
Emma Gatrill - Two Wooden Spoons
Cozz - Questions

Video Review: Megalomatic - 'Cesspit'

Scottish power trio Megalomatic have released the video for their hard-hitting track 'Cesspit' in support of their new EP 'Symbolism' which was released in September of 2017. Formed in 2013 by Craig McKenzie (guitar and vocals), Jamie Barnes (drums) and Ben Reffin (bass), the lads take influence from artists such as Biffy Clyro and Mastodon to create dark, heavy and melodic tunes.

Directed by Stuart Breadner, the video explores themes of depression and anxiety which are symbolised by the lone figure sat in the theatre. Yellow balloons marked with static smiley faces surround him and as he grows more anxious and fantasises about destroying the balloons. The video is brilliantly made and the message is clear and precise.

Musically, the track is powerful and dark. Heavy guitar riffs coupled with intricate drum fills give the song a sense of groove. Moments like this show a hint of experimentation that can sometimes be lost in current metal music. The melodic breakdown is a welcome change allowing the track to breath and the little guitar lick at the 3:23 mark is a real touch of class.

With 'Cesspit', Megalomatic have created a monster. The song and video marry perfectly ensuring the band have a unique presence in a metal scene full of the same old clichés.

Check out the video for the track below.

21 Releases to get Excited About in 2018

After an incredible year for music in 2017, we preview the releases we're most excited about (potentially) arriving in 2018.

Chromeo - Head Over Heels

Chromeo are by far the most underrated electronic, funk and disco duo knocking around today. Their goofy lyrics, 80's influenced synth work, cheesy guitar solos and hilariously brilliant vocoder hooks all come together to create songs worthy of any credible radio station. Check out their new single ‘Juice’ and we guarantee you’ll be walking like John Travolta in ‘Saturday Night Fever’ for the rest of the day.

First Aid Kit – Ruins

Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit are slated to release their fourth studio album in 2018 and their second released through major label Columbia. Following on from 2014's 'Stay Gold' and with three brilliant singles already released, the sisters look set to make 2018 their most successful year.

Franz Ferdinand – Always Ascending

In early February 2018, indie legends Franz Ferdinand return with their fifth studio album. Working with Philippe Zdar of French synth-pop duo Cassius, 'Always Ascending' promises to be packed full of electronic, new-wave influenced pop hits.

S. Carey – Hundred Acres

Multi-instrumentalist and long-time member of Bon Iver’s touring band Sean Carey will release his third record as a solo artist. Expect beautifully formed folk songs with sweeping slide guitars and thick, layered vocal harmonies. If single ‘Fool’s Gold’ is anything to go by, we really are in for a rare treat.

ISLAND – Feels Like Air

Not Another Music Blog. favourites ISLAND will release their debut full length LP in April. The lads use heavy delays on their guitars coupled with Rollo Doherty’s gravelly vocal tones to create a unique sound. We expect big things from the London quartet next year.

Arctic Monkeys – TBA

Sheffield legends Arctic Monkeys have been spinning the rumour mill since mid-2017 about their impending untitled follow up to 2013's magnificent ‘AM’. With no music surfacing as yet, we can only hope Alex Turner and the boys pull out all the stops for potentially one of next year’s biggest albums.

MGMT – Little Dark Age

MGMT return with their fourth studio album ‘Little Dark Age’. The duo, hailing from America, have already teased two brilliant, psychedelic influenced pop bangers. ‘Little Dark Age’ is expected to be a long-awaited and welcome return to form.

Johnny Marr – TBA

One of the coolest and greatest guitarists of all time has been teasing a new project through his Instagram account over the past few months with each new picture captioned ‘Album 3’. Packed full of those signature jangly riffs, The Smiths legend will be hopefully returning with a bang.

Kanye West – Turbo Grafx 16

Yeezy has been talking about this new record since the release of 2016’s ‘The Life of Pablo’. 2017 was a quiet year for Kanye and reports even suggested he went all Bon Iver on us and whisked himself off to a wintery cabin to focus on more music. We can wish he drops more music this year, but as we all know, nothing is certain in Kanye West’s world.

Grimes – TBA

We don’t know much about a new Grimes project (or even if there will be one) but the rumours have been bubbling away nicely for the last few months. It’s been three years since her last record ‘Art Angels’ blew us away so a new album will be welcomed with open arms.

Sports Team – Winter Nets

Northwest London-based Sports Team arrive with their debut EP ‘Winter Nets’ in January. The six-piece have garnered a brilliant live following and the buzz around them is constantly growing. They released two brilliant singles in late 2017 and have been featured on many prestigious ‘One’s to Watch in 2018’ lists. ‘Winter Nets' promises to be one of the indie debuts of the year

Marmozets – Knowing What You Know Now

After exploding on to the rock scene with their debut album in 2014 and extensive touring around the world, Yorkshire natives Marmozets return with their second album, ‘Knowing What You Know Now’. Expect riffs.

 Father John Misty - TBA

Josh Tillman told Uncut that his next record, which he has said will arrive in the coming year, is “a heartache album.” He has compared the effort to his second FJM full-length, 2015’s ‘I Love You Honeybear’. If he sticks to his word, it means there will be two Father John Misty albums released in two years. Simply lovely.

The 1975 - Music for Cars

After a blisteringly successful couple of years, The 1975 are releasing their third studio album in 2018. With no concrete release date announced yet, we’ll have to keep our eyes and ears open. There’s just one thing we ask, more bangers and less instrumentals please!

Hookworms – Microshift

The third band from Yorkshire on this list, Hookworms announced the arrival of their new album ‘Microshift’ along with the fantastic single ‘Negative Space’. The single teases a more electronic musical direction, but as ever with Hookworms, nothing is as it seems.

Young Fathers – TBA

2014s Mercury Music Prize winners Young Fathers arrived with their new single 'Lord' in November of 2017 sparking rumours of a new album. There has been no official word as yet, but we can live in hope. The gospel influenced ‘Lord’ definitely peaked our interest.

Fickle Friends – You Are Someone Else

Brighton five-piece Fickle Friends have been very busy over the past 18 months. They’ve toured the UK, released pop banger after pop banger and have announced their debut album. Working with The 1975 producer Mike Crossey, the album promises to be full of catchy pop hooks and glistening synth parts perfect for a summer soundtrack.

Shame – Songs of Praise

No, this isn’t a covers album filled with biblical hymns from BBC2’s programme of the same name; it is in fact London post-punk outfit Shame’s debut album. After lighting up the London punk scene over the last few years, Shame are ready to go big and we can’t wait to see them grow.

The Streets - TBA

Mike Skinner announced that he would be reforming The Streets for a reunion tour in 2018. That tour sold out in under two minutes. (Can anyone sort us a ticket plz?) Since then, Skinner has released two tunes that have received mixed reviews but a new album could be right around the corner.

The Vaccines - Combat Sports

Indie heroes The Vaccines return with their fourth studio album 'Combat Sports'. The lads dropped the first single off the record titled 'I Can't Quit' in early January. The tune is raw, anthemic and perfect for those summer festival crowds.

Frank Ocean - TBA

Frank posted a picture on his Tumblr with a slogan on a blokes hat saying, ‘If you liked 2017, you’ll love 2018’. He released a fair few singles in 2017 following up to 2016's 'Blonded' and 'Endless'. Another album would be a joy. Come on Frank. You can do it.
