Track Review: Sunken - 'Over the Days'

Sunken have been making waves for only a short amount of time. Building their burgeoning reputation with shows alongside the likes of Puma Blue and Sorry, the four-piece have finally released their debut single 'Over the Days' through Handsome Dad Records.

Entirely self-produced by the South London-based band, 'Over the Days' opens with a vintage string section delicately accentuated by jazz-influenced piano chords before Poppy Billingham's beautifully soulful vocals are introduced. 17-year-old Billingham says, 'the song explores the notion of co-dependency within a relationship, learning to be less reliant on one person whilst equally learning to love them unconditionally.'

One of the most intriguing traits of the band is the way they combine organic instruments with digital synths to create a unique, modern sound of jazz-tinged, soulful grooves. Structurally the song is quite linear and doesn't really conform to any stereotype of pop music standards. The free-flowing structure coupled with the forever changing vocal melodies ensure this track is interesting throughout its hefty five-minute runtime.

The outro is a real touch of class. The neo-soul and jazz vibes are amplified as an amazing saxophone solo is played and the drum grooves intensify. It's here where we are able to truly appreciate the musical talent of the band.

This debut single from Sunken is an absolute triumph. It's the perfect slice of experimental, soulful and incredibly mature pop we absolutely adore. It's bound to be the be the soundtrack to many late summer night in the months to come.
