The Best of Fresh Finds (04/04/2018)

In this series, we pick out the best from Spotify's Fresh Finds playlists which shines a light on the latest and greatest songs from undiscovered artists around the world. You never know, you might find your new favourite tune. Click the titles to listen!

Ice Baths - New Strappings, Pt. 1

London-based post-punks Ice Baths have only been around a short while. Their spiky, noisy and sometimes uncomfortable sound is one of originality and severe urgency. The way the track builds to all-out noise towards the final stages is brilliant and the heavily reverberated vocals add a calmness to the rowdy chaos.

Dogeyed - Deep Dreaming

Bristol's Dogeyed are soon to be releasing their debut EP in May, and 'Deep Dreaming' is the first cut from that. Harriet Elder's vocals are sharp and passionate against a raw but equally dreamy and lazy isntrumental. This is another great track from an ever-growing Bristol music scene.

Suzi Island - Show Me the Way

The debut single from Brighton duo Suzi Island, 'Show Me the Way' is a dense and lavishly produced summer banger waiting to explode. Both only 19 years old, the lads have already carved out a sound that is sure to resonate with a young, indie-loving audience.

King Colour - A Night at Flo's

This instrumental is from King Colour's brilliant new 9 track EP titled 'Mood Lighting'. If you're a fan of killer guitar solos, brilliant drum grooves and 60s influenced organ sounds this one is definitely for you. Rock n' roll isn't dead when this lot are around.

Slow Pilot - Grow

'Grow' arrives on Slow Pilot's debut album 'Gentle Intruder'. Released on Starman Records, the tune is one filled with dreamlike textures that perfectly accompany Pieter Perisman's soft lead vocal. The guitar solo towards the end of the track is unconventionally bluesy but grabs the attention and cuts through the whistful instrumentation perfectly.

The Best of Fresh Finds (28/03/2018)

Carla Geneve - Greg's Discount Chemist

Aussie native Carla Geneve's new single 'Greg's Discount Chemist' is a bright and uplifting indie-folk track that sounds not too dissimilar from peers Courtney Barnett and Jen Cloher. The stand-alone single is hopefully the first of many to come this year from the nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter.

Holm - Hope

Holm is the solo project from Danish multi-instrumentalist Mikkel Holm-Silkjaer. This new track is produced, written and performed entirely by Holm himself. The twanging guitars and raw vocals combine brilliantly to create a DIY sound whilst maintaining an air of polished professionalism. Holm's passion is plain to hear throughout the brilliantly performed track.

Candy - Apartment in the City

The second Australian on this list, Candy is the solo project of former Amyl and the Sniffers member Calum Newton. His sound sits somewhere between shoegaze and lo-fi pop whilst taking influence from emo and mid-2000s indie. 'Apartment in the City' is his first single off the upcoming album 'Under the Weather'.

Bdrmm - Kare

'Kare' is the brand new single from Hull boys Bdrmm. It's a tune of beautifully hazy vocals, swirling guitar leads and driving rhythm sections that build and fall to create welcome intense moments throughout the reverb-heavy, dreamlike sound. Produced by maestro Alex Greaves (Trash, PLAZA) these lads from the North of England are definitely ones to watch.

Video Age - Hold On (I Was Wrong)

'Hold On (I Was Wrong)' is the new single from retro pop duo Video Age. The funky basslines, nostalgia-filled synth stabs and Nile Rogers-esque guitar parts make this tune brilliantly fun and awfully catchy. The perfect tune to bring in the summer.

Album Review: Haley Heynderickx - 'I Need to Start a Garden'

Haley Heynderickx has been making waves with her self-described 'doom folk' since the release of 2016's 'Fish Eye' EP. Growing up in Oregon, Heyndrickx now resides in Portland where she has honed her craft and musical style by mixing a love of jazz radio with 60s and 70s folk influences. Released through Mama Bird Recording Co, 'I Need to Start a Garden' is her debut full-length LP.

The album opens with the beautifully intimate 'No Face' where the delicate tone of the record is instantly set. The solitary acoustic guitar intertwines perfectly with Heynderickx's vocal. Second track 'No Bug Collector' is another finger-picked track but this time Heynderickx's vocals are double-tracked giving the song a fuller sound accentuated by baritone brass sections and deep rolling percussion. The instrumentation has an insect-like feel here, scurrying and snapping to wonderfully mimic the lyrics. On 'Jo' the vocals are centred once again to create that great sense of intimacy before the album's centrepiece 'Worth It' is introduced. Clocking in at just under eight minutes, the track is sprawling and twisting epic that ebbs and flows with great intensity.

On 'Show You a Body' and 'Untitled God Song' Heynderickx takes it back to her acoustic roots until halfway through the latter where the band take centre stage to produce a moment of pure attitude and grit. 'Oom Sha La La' is probably the most 'pop' sounding tune on the record. Lyrically the track seems rather nonsensical before Heyndrickx loudly screams the album title over and over. The album closer 'Drinking Song' is another relaxed folk number to make the LP come full circle.

Even though the album is achingly short (it clocks in at thirty minutes with only eight tracks), Heynderickx has created a beautifully concise and charming body of work that is easily one of the best folk records to be released in 2018 so far.

Track Review: Hum Fuzz - 'Act With Me'

At the end of last year, we introduced you to a young indie band from the South West of England called Hum Fuzz. They had just released their debut single 'Girl from the Bend' and for a first single we were pleasantly surprised. Now, the boys are back with their second single titled 'Act With Me' and it's as fun and well executed as the last.

The tune opens with upbeat rhythm guitar and vocals before the drums and bass are introduced to further accentuate the highly danceable groove. The song is packed full of catchy vocal melodies, lush, melodic instrumentation and lovely little breaks that show that the lads really know what they're doing. Once again Leo Nathan's vocals take centre stage and this time around they sound even better. There is more control and a little more restraint which shows Hum Fuzz have discovered a little bit more maturity in their unique sound.

The song is more concise than their previous effort and it sounds as if the boys have honed their sound and style even more. After this second teaser, we really can't wait to see how much the four-piece grows over the year.

New Video: Brad Stank - O.T.D

Brad Stank has shared the new self-directed video for his brilliantly sensual single 'O.T.D'. Stank first came to attention after releasing the relaxed but equally groovy tracks 'Flirting In Space' and 'Daddy Blue'. Stank's solo material is far removed from his work as the drummer in rock 'n' roll reinventors Trudy and the Romance, and with this new jazz-influenced vibe, we can't get enough.

Released through your new favourite indie label Untitled Recs, the video explores the pathetic state of being separated from your lover with both humour and romanticism. The tune itself is beautiful slow-burning track full of thickly textured vocals and guitar licks that hit you right in the feels. The hints of subtle psychedelia played against breezy, jazz-tinged drum grooves are a wonder; making it easy to get lost in the vast soundscapes of Stank's creations.

We're excited to see what happens next with the young Liverpudlian. His unique sound has definitely caught our attention and hopefully will grab yours too. 'O.T.D' is now available on a very limited run of copies as the B-side to a newly remastered version of the majestic 'Daddy Blue'. Get yourself one here before they go.

The Best of Fresh Finds (28/02/2018)

Floyd Fuji - Drama

Floyd Fuji is the solo project from Kyle Thornton of soul and R&B collective Kyle Thornton & The Company. 'Drama' is the first single released under his new moniker and it really is a gem. Channeling Anderson .Paak and Childish Gambino, the track is a sexy sounding soul number full of psychedelic moments and smooth instrumentals.

Cereals - Entertainers

German indie four-piece Cereals arrive with their debut single 'Entertainers'. The track is an energetic indie-pop influenced tune that smacks of The Strokes' early material. Its a fun, upbeat and energetic track that with the right exposure, is enough to get people feeling nostalgic for that early 2000s indie magic.

Falcon Jane - Go With the Flow

Falcon Jane makes music in the style of 'Plez Rock' which is apparently a genre inspired by nature, truth, peace and magic which, in all honesty, are things we can get behind. New single 'Go With The Flow' is a lovely song of laidback, layered vocals, dreampop infused synths and whistful guitar leads.

Knox White - You've Been My Girl

Knox White comes from LA and his music is exactly the kind of stuff you would want to soundtrack your LA lifestyle. The funky beats, warped synths and slapped bass lines make for essential listening.

Purr - Painted Memory

New York dreampop outfit Purr combine catchy vocal melodies with relaxed guitars to create a sound not too dissimliar to that of indie legends Real Estate. The harmonised boy/girl vocals are a touch of class and help Purr stand out from the ever growing indie crowd.

John Moods - Leap Of love

Believe it or not, John Moods' new tune 'Leap Of Love' was recorded on a phone whilst travelling around Spain and Portugal. Hailing from Germany, the multi-instumentalist has an endearingly high falsetto that cuts through the dreamlike instrumentation. 'Leap Of Love' is the first single of Moods' new album 'The Essential John Moods' released on April 20th.

Shiboski - Getaway

Released on Majestic Casual records, 'Getaway' is LA producer Shiboski's debut single. The track is an experimental piece packed full of warped synths, funky guitars, insane key changes and enough grooves to get any stiff hip moving. Keep an eye out for more from Shiboski as this tune slaps.

EP Review: Glass Mountain - 'Wow & Flutter'

Bradford-based quartet Glass Mountain have released their second EP and first through Yorkshire label Hide & Seek Records. Drawing influences from alt-rock, dream-pop, post-rock, electronica and grandiose cinematic pieces, Glass Mountain have created a sound that's unique and worthy of any stadium performance.

The EP opens with the massive sounding 'Gin Flows Through My Veins' and from the off, Glass Mountain show their aptitude for creating songs with varying textures and rhythms whilst maintaining a consistent sound. On the second track 'Wait All Alone', the band introduce their indie-pop influences with a lighter, more upbeat sound. Experimental rhythms combined with glistening synths and bright guitar leads build throughout before the track drops to a brilliant single drum groove.

With 'Ghosts', Glass Mountain tap into their heavier, shoegaze influences. The guitars are more prominent here as they drive the choruses along with the heavy drums. The standout moment of the EP is the beautifully delicate closer 'Have to Lie'. The tenderness of Harry Hanson's lead vocal is highly emotive as the instrumentation slowly builds. The song contrasts brilliantly with the more imposing opening tracks.

On this second EP, Glass Mountain have shown they can balance large productions with moments of carefully managed restraint. The songs are emotive and well-formed and as an overall body of work, the 'Wow & Flutter' EP is one of brilliance. It won't be long until their anthemic choruses will be filling stadiums up and down the country.

EP Review: Heavy Lungs - 'Abstract Thoughts'

After a handful of shows supporting the likes of METZ and IDLES, Bristolian punk outfit Heavy Lungs release their debut EP titled 'Abstract Thoughts' on the 2nd of February. Forming in the Spring of 2017, the quartet's influences vary from GØGGS to Iceage and Iggy Pop to Tyler, the Creator. These influences amount to a sound of raw passion and heat worthy of any serious punk outfit.

The EP opens with the intense 'Poster Boy' which is a three and a half minute blast of complex drum patterns and simple but effective guitar riffs. Up next is the brutal title track that combines heavy beats and blues-influenced riffs. It's on this track where guitarist Oliver Southgate really lets rip with his experimental and noisily jarring solos.

In a welcomed move, the overall pace is initially slowed down on the Blur influenced second single 'Stutter' before the four-piece turn up their trademark ferocity in the final stages of the track. On 'Descend', Heavy Lungs take it back to basics with a four-note blast of a track as frontman Danny Nedelko manically screams the lyrics. 'Charmer' is the heavily distorted, bass-led closer that exudes darkness and passion. Nedelko performs with an energy that is hard to fully fathom and he doesn't let up on the final track. In the final stages of the tune, the band come together to create a riotous sound that can only lead listeners to want more. It's the perfect closer to a brilliantly strong debut EP.

On 'Abstract Thoughts' Heavy Lungs have set the bar high. The use of experimentation, raw energy, fantastic musicianship and unbelievable passion amounts to one of the strongest debut EPs we've heard in a long time. Guitar bands take note, this is how you introduce yourself to the world.

Worst

The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy

The Nickelback of the EDM world have returned to haunt your nightmares. This is easily the worst song of the year so far and unless Ed Sheeran churns out more vanilla shite, it'll probably hold that award throughout 2018. It's unadventurous, bland and lyrically drab. The Chainsmokers' attempt at attitude seems clumsy and falls terribly flat.

Kylie Minogue - Dancing

Let's not beat around the bush here, Kylie Minogue had some bangers back in the day. Unfortunately this new one is a shocker. The euro-pop finger-picked guitar combined with dated synth work and claps, all combine to create an awkwardly unadventurous attempt at sounding current. Also, it's time to ban the vocal sampled drop that's in every pop song now. It's so annoying.

Callum Beattie - Some Heroes Don't Wear Capes

This genuinely sounds like a song written by some kid who's just learnt his first four guitar chords. Beattie's voice is weak and all over the place, also please don't get us started on those awfully soppy lyrics. The whole tune is just one massive cringefest and we deserve better.

Example - The Answer

We genuinely thought this bloke had vanished into the pop ether for good. It wasn't to be. Your 'Carling drinking mate's favourite artist who saw him at a local festival performing on the back of a truck with a random DJ' is back and is worse than ever. The drop is boring, the vocal melody is monotonous and the rap is so bad it hurts. 'Go the distance like Mo does' is one of the worst lyrics we've heard.

Mouse On Mars - Dimensional People Part III Feat. Justin Vernon

German DJ duo Mouse On Mars have enlisted the help of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon to create a beautifully warped first single which is off their upcoming project 'Dimensional People'. The track is a soundscape of Vernon's beautiful layered vocals, saxophone notes and stringed instruments. It's one of those tunes where you hear a new element after each listen and we love it.

Gengahr - Before Sunrise

'Before Sunrise' is the latest single off Gengahr's imminent album 'Where Wildness Grows'. The track is fun, and brilliantly performed with a great groove that locks perfectly with the bass. The lead guitar riff is catchy and is accentuated by lovely synth work. 'Before Sunrise' is going to be a sure-fire summer festival hit.

Mount Eerie - Distortion

Phil Elverum is back with an eleven-minute epic of a track. Elverum is as captivating as ever with his storytelling as the song builds with vocal harmonies, pianos and dark guitar strums to create a musical atmosphere that's impossible to not get sucked into.

Jimi Hendrix - Mannish Boy

Jimi Hendrix's previously unreleased cover of Muddy Waters' 'Mannish Boy' was recorded at the famous Record Plant in New York way back in 1969. Accompanied by his Band of Gypsys, Hendrix sounds as timeless as ever. It's the first single from the new posthumous album 'Both Sides of the Sky' released in March of this year.

Album Review: Shame - 'Songs of Praise'

Shame formed three years ago in a practice space at the Queen's Head in Brixton. With three months of spare time ahead after completing their AS levels, starting a band seemed the best thing to set their minds to. Since their incarnation Shame have toured relentlessly with heavy weights like Fat White Family and Warpaint gaining a massive live following and earning themselves some well deserved hype at the same time. 'Songs of Praise' is the punk band's debut release through American indie label Dead Oceans.

The album opens with the dark and brooding track 'Dust on Trial'. Vocalist Charlie Steen performs with a grit and attitude that sets the album up perfectly. Second track 'Concrete' is a fast and powerful tear through trapped relationships and self doubt. The call and response vocals in the verses grow with intensity as the song progresses to the catchiest of choruses. The lead single 'One Rizla' is a fantastic take on embracing insecurities, and is also one of the most melodic cuts on the record. The guitar riffs, combined with heavy grooves and charmingly sloppy vocals come together to create one of the best tunes released in 2017. 'The Lick' is a brooding stomper of spoken word lyricism and sludging bass lines whilst 'Tasteless' and 'Donk' crank up the speed and intensity once more.

Shame's brilliant use of dynamics is brought to the table on slow builder 'Gold Hole'. The final chorus erupts triumphantly with Steen's vocals at their most passionate. Towards the end of the record it feels as if there could be a little more variation when it comes to the instrumentation and overall performance. 'Friction' and 'Lampoon' generally feel a little monotonous. All this is forgotten though as the final track 'Angie' is a closer of epic proportions. Clocking in at just under seven minutes, the track builds and drops throughout before transforming into a brash wall of beautiful noise.

'Songs of Praise' is an exceptional debut from a young band with a glowing future. The album itself was recorded in a mere ten days and with a total run time of thirty-eight minutes, the record is concise and to the point. The mainstream music world may not want them but Shame are the guitar band Britain needs.

Worst

Jack White - Connected by Love

Jack White is back and weirder than ever. This tune simply doesn't work. The track opens with some strange dubstep wobbles before Jack's crooney, off-kilter vocals are introduced. The whole thing just feels super awkward and the odd vocal melody is nothing but annoying. The organ solo is OK, but the track as a whole misses the mark completely.

Fall Out Boy - Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)

After being transported back to 2005 last night at an intimate Fall Out Boy show in Brixton, we could've been forgiven for expecting good things from the new FOB album. Unfortunately not. This track stinks. The dance/pop influenced instrumentals feel cringey and overblown and the 'Woah's' in the chorus are just plain lazy. Maybe it's time for a Greatest Hits tour? No-one wants this new stuff.

Vance Joy - We're Going Home

Australian ukulele playing troubadour Vance Joy has returned with his sickeningly drab single. The most boring chord progression linked with mundane melodies and predictable instrumentation makes this song one of the most forgettable singles we've heard in a long time. With the likes of this bloke and Mr. Sheeran clogging up the 'acoustic' space in the charts, it's no wonder the genre is at a low.

SKYGGE - Hello Shadow Feat. Kiesza

Most pop music nowadays sounds like it's been made by robots, but we don't actually want REAL robots making it. SKYGGE is an artificial intelligence experiment which consists of computers programmed to sequence music based on data and algorithms. This is pretty worrying for pop music as a whole and to be quite honest, the tune sounds terrible too.

David Byrne - Everybody's Coming to My House

Talking Heads front man David Byrne returns with his brand-new single 'Everybody's Coming to My House. Vocally the track is wonderful and their are moments of real gold. The drum beat is driving but chaotic and the rest of the experimental instrumentation glistens throughout. We can't wait to hear Byrne's new album which his released in March.

Oscar Jerome - Smile on a Screen Feat. James Massiah

London-based multi-instrumentalist Oscar Jerome has been making a name for himself in the South London music scene recently. His new single combines attitude with punk, jazz, hip hop and funk to build a fresh and unique sound. A must listen for fans of Tom Misch and The Clash.

Sunflower Bean - Crisis Fest

American rock trio Sunflower Bean are back with their first single off their upcoming album 'Twentytwo in Blue'. The track is simple but catchy. The bluesy, 70s influenced riffs are a lovely touch. Expect big things from Sunflower Bean this year.

Jay Rock - King's Dead Feat. Kendrick Lamar & Future

Jay Rock has enlisted hip hop giants Kendrick Lamar and Future for his new track which is also the latest off Marvel's Black Panther soundtrack. James Blake also shows up for a warped middle-eight before the track transitions into a dark trap beat. Everyone is on top form here and it's a joy to listen to.

Album Review: Francis and the Lights - 'Just for Us'

Francis and the Lights is the musical project by American singer-songwriter and producer Francis Starlite. 'Just for Us' was dropped as a surprise release in the new year and is Francis' second full length LP after his successful debut 'Farewell, Starlite!' back in 2016. Francis has made a name for himself by rubbing shoulders with some of the finest artists around at the moment including Justin Vernon, Kanye West and Chance the Rapper.

The album opens well with 'Morning' which is a short piano led ballad that sounds like it's been lifted straight off his mate Chance the Rapper's mix-tape 'Colouring Book'. Second track 'Just for Us' combines a hard-hitting, rigid beat with beautifully punchy synth work. A guest appearance from Justin Vernon in the chorus is a great touch but the pair can't quite seem to recreate the amazing success of their previous hit 'Friends'.

Unfortunately, the record goes down hill from here. Third track 'Faithful' feels like a boring paint-by-numbers ballad that is introduced too early in the track-listing, whereas 'Back in Time' aims for fun but ultimately sounds like a half-baked idea. On 'Tear It Up', 'Scream So Loud' and 'I Won't Lie to You', Francis' vocals are really questionable, by being less reliant on auto-tune and effects, his voice sounds weak and is melodically all over the shop.

In the final stages of the record there are some nice moments such as the nostalgic synth parts at the end of 'Breaking Up' but ultimately it's too little, too late. Overall the album is sloppy and feels rushed, especially in the vocal department. Each song seems like an unfinished product and the album closes with a whimper. Compared to his debut, 'Just for Us' is void of those memorable pop hits that made Francis' last effort so enjoyable.

Liam Payne & Rita Ora - For You (Fifty Shades Freed)

We can't believe they are still making these Fifty Shades of Whatever films but hear we are. The dull one from One Direction has teamed up with Rihanna wannabe Rita Ora to deliver this awfully drab dance number. It's fantastically forgettable, much like the films.

Arlissa - Hearts Ain't Gonna Lie Feat. Jonas Blue

We were hoping that 2018 would be the year that tropical house died. Sadly, it seems like this isn't to be. Arlissa has joined forces with Essex based producer and DJ Jonas Blue to create a tune that plays on all the current EDM clichés. Big drop? Check. Vocal samples? Check. Pitch bending synth lead instead of a proper chorus? Check. Oh how inventive of you!

DON BROCO - Come Out to LA

We genuinely believe guitar music is going to come back in a big way this year, but if rock bands start churning out material like this new DON BROCO single then consider our prediction a failure. Terrible lyrics and vocal performances coupled with finger clicks and dodgy synth stabs make this new tune a recipe for disaster.

Showtek & Moby - Natural Blues

We can only hope that Moby got paid an absolute fortune for this abomination. This weird remix/collaboration of Moby's prefect original now has added trance synths and a massive house beat resulting in one of the most awkward releases of the week.

Mr JT is back. The pop legend has taken his music in a super funky, electronic, grown-up direction. The production is magnificent with frequent JT collaborator Timbaland taking the reigns to create a weird and wonderful experimental funk number. The dirty, maximalist ending might not be to everyone's taste but we can't wait to hear what's next.

Bruno Mars - Finesse (Remix) Feat. Cardi B

Pop maestro Bruno Mars has released a new version of 'Finesse', now with added Cardi B. Simply put this tune is a whole lot of 90's influenced fun. Bruno Mars proves why he is the master of the pop hook and the way he and Cardi B play of each other is great. We challenge you to not want to dance to this.

FREAK - Everyone's the Same

FREAK have started the new year with a bang. There's riffs galore in the new single from the punk boys from Chelmsford. The tune is fast, bold and in your face with Connar's lead vocal taking more of a melodic turn compared to previous FREAK releases. This one will definitely knock your socks off.

Superorganism - Everybody Wants to be Famous

We were blown away when we were lucky enough to see Superorganism perform this tune on Later... with Jools Holland back in 2017 and the official recorded version is just as good. Full of fun samples and quirky production, the eight-piece 'supergroup' are in for a big 2018.
